Coloring Book Focused on Girl Empowerment

Color the Strength

After observing a lack of diversity in children’s coloring books, Megan Holmes, a professor at the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, chose to create her own. As a lifelong creative and co-illustrator of Jammie Claus, she dedicated her peaceful summer mornings to drawing before her three children got up.

The illustration design process was carried out with careful intention. She aimed to portray girls of diverse body shapes, hair types, and abilities, participating in activities that emphasize qualities like creativity, intelligence, and kindness.

Every page radiates strength, happiness, and confidence, surpassing individual differences to honor shared values. “Instead of concentrating only on our differences, I wanted to highlight the common traits that unite us, creating a sense of inclusivity and affirmation for everyone in the book,” she explained.

Books Foster Self-Esteem

The feedback on the book has been extremely favorable. Both parents and educators have commended its varied representation and inspiring themes, highlighting its role in building confidence and encouraging self-expression.

One especially moving comment came from a mother whose daughter felt truly “seen” after identifying with a character that resembled her. To Holmes, the book serves a greater purpose than merely being a coloring book; it acts as a means to build self-esteem, encourage meaningful discussions about diversity, and assist girls in recognizing and embracing their strengths. “I aspire for this book to inspire girls to dream big, accept their individuality, and recognize the worth of their distinctiveness,” she stated. Her efforts don’t end there.

She is already moving on to her next venture—an adult coloring book centered on female leadership. This upcoming book will feature detailed designs, motivational quotes, and thoughtful prompts, all intended to encourage women to delve into personal development, empowerment, and leadership.
